Global Shortage of Transformer Core Steel

Nick de Vries, the chief technology officer at Silicon Ranch, compares a transformer to an interstate on-ramp. It boosts the voltage of electricity from solar plants to match grid transmission lines. “They’re your ticket to ride,” he says. “Without a high-voltage transformer, you don’t have a project.”

ButRecently, this ticket has grown much harder to come by. The demand for transformers has spiked worldwide, and so the wait time to get a new transformer has doubled from 50 weeks in 2021 to nearly two years now, according to a report from Wood MacKenzie, an energy-analytics firm. The wait for the more specialized large power transformers (LPTs), which step up voltage from power stations to transmission lines, is up to four years. Costs have also climbed by 60 to 80 percent since 2020.

Why Are Transformers in Short Supply?

Five years ago, de Vries feared transformer shortages would delay his solar projects. To avoid this, he started ordering transformers years in advance. Silicon Ranch now has a pipeline of custom transformers to ensure their solar projects stay on track. They aren’t the only ones. According to Wood MacKenzie, 25% of global renewable energy projects could be delayed waiting for transformers.

In India, the wait for 220-kilovolt transformers has grown from 8 to 14 months. This delay could affect nearly 150 gigawatts of new solar development. The shortage also affects utilities, homeowners, businesses, rail systems, and EV charging stations. In Clallam County, Washington, officials started denying new home construction in 2022 due to a lack of transformers. To address the backlog, utilities used refurbished transformers, but these likely won’t last as long as new ones.

CRGO Steel: The Backbone of Transformer Efficiency

A key factor in the transformer shortage is the limited supply of grain-oriented electrical steel (GOES), particularly CRGO steel. This steel is essential for transformer cores. It ensures efficiency and reduces energy loss during power transmission. CRGO steel‘s grain orientation makes transformers more efficient, improving their performance and extending their lifespan.

As the demand for CRGO steel grows, industries like electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy technologies are competing for it. This increased demand has strained supply chains and worsened the transformer shortage.

Innovations in Transformer Designs

To address the shortage, engineers are rethinking transformer designs. They aim to increase efficiency, reduce reliance on scarce materials, and create transformers that fit modern power grids. One key innovation is integrating solid-state power electronics into transformers. This allows them to easily switch between AC and DC power.

Traditional transformers only handle AC. But many new technologies, such as hydrogen fuel electrolyzers, EV charging stations, and energy storage, require DC power. New transformers capable of handling both AC and DC will help power grids adapt to modern energy needs.

Modular Controllable Transformers (MCTs)

Engineers are also developing modular controllable transformers (MCTs). These use semiconductors and active electronic components to transform electricity and convert AC to DC in a single stage. MCTs are flexible, modular, and adaptable, making them well-suited for renewable energy applications.

These transformers help integrate solar and wind power more smoothly into the grid. They ensure reliable energy distribution, even with fluctuating energy sources.

Flexible Transformers: A New Solution

A breakthrough in transformer technology is the flexible LPT, which allows transformers to handle varying voltage needs without complete redesigns. This innovation can help reduce transformer customization, speed up manufacturing, and ease the strain on supply chains. The flexible LPT could become a universal spare, helping to reduce transformer shortages.

At the same time, Siemens Energy is working on rapid response transformers—plug-and-play backups that can replace a broken transformer within weeks. Similarly, renewable energy company Avangrid has introduced a mobile transformer that can be quickly deployed to solar or wind projects.

The Role of CRGO Steel in the Energy Transition

As the world shifts to greener energy, CRGO steel will play a critical role. It is essential for transformers and many clean energy technologies, such as EV chargers and energy storage systems. The shortage of CRGO steel limits the ability to scale up clean energy projects, making innovations in transformer technology more urgent.
